The oh-so-wonderful animated music video

Once upon a time....MTV and Much Music played actual music videos. Its true. You may not believe me because the only things that appear on these channels these days is reality tv shows documenting the lives of ridiculous people.

Thankfully Youtube came around and gave us an entirely new realm in which to find videos that relate to songs. One thing that has come out of this transition is that the flashy big money music videos are often less popular than a well thought out, artistically created video. Its all about going viral. The other lesson that has been demonstrated is that it doesn't take a ton of money to make an awesome video, just go watch OK-GO videos like "Here it goes again." This mentality of creating an incredible video with just an idea, patience and creativity has lent itself very well to animators who love good music.

Here a few videos that are worth mentioning.

OK-GO released this video for their song "Last Leaf". Nothing more here than toast, time and patience.

Grizzly Bear released a video for their song "Two Weeks." Its a beautiful song, but the video is a little weird/creepy. Thankfully, a fan of the band created and posted this video.

I also wanted to mention a video for a song by Ben Folds and Nick Hornby. Hornby is well known for his writing with such books as High Fidelity and About a Boy. He recently had an opportunity to be more involved with music on Ben Folds' latest album. Their video for "From Above" is a GREAT song, and a very crafty video.

The internet is awesome. Its ability to push artists to do more creative things for less money is just one reason I love it.

BOYLE UNLIMITED

Shary Boyle creates modern mythologies.  She is a contemporary canadian artist that explores relationship roles, vanity, modern ideology and the relationship between art and it's environment.

But to say that is rather limiting.  She does more than this.  She asks her viewers to question what they think they know.  She wants us to question what we believe is true and rewrite our definitions -in pencil.

Boyle is unlimited.  Her mediums are as varied as her themes.  Her message, however, is always clear.

Shary will be showing at the Art Gallery of Ontario until December 5th, 2010.
